unearthing.stories of belonging

multi-disciplinary artwork

Unearthing is a project initiated in 2025, exploring the ties between people and trees across times, geographies, and life stories — through the lenses of memory, migration, and belonging.
It began with recorded sensory walks along the creek in Aarhus with people who call this city their home, but also have roots in other parts of the world. During the walks people were invited to share stories guided by these questions: What is your earliest memory of trees? Which trees have been witnesses to your life? What have you learned from trees?

These voices and stories are now becoming a sound installation and exhibition, in collaboration with composer Karoline Skriver, with the premiere of the full work set for 2027./2028.
Warm thanks to all 28 participants who shared their stories, to Karoline Skriver for the collaboration, and Aarhus Festuge and Variable Matter for hosting the first public showing of the project.

Project is financially supported by Aarhus Kommune.

Listen to the first fragment of the sound work — an 8-minute piece woven from stories recorded during the sensory walks and an original composition by Karoline Skriver.

Best with good headphones.
